I used to frequent Dutchie’s (Waterloo) quite often and stopped for a while after experiencing produce that went bad after just a day or two. I decided to give it another try this week… same thing happened with multiple products (tomatoes – two types, strawberries, broccoli florets etc… ). It was a disgusting waste of money!
The large tomatoes had large soft spots that had caved/rotted just a day later. The cherry tomatoes were completely soft and shrivelled. The strawberries, 3 containers had several strawberries in each that were completely covered in mold just a day after, even though they were refridgerated. The broccoli florets were two to a package sealed in heavy plastic that had the consistency of rubber once the plastic was removed a day later. ALL of these items went to the trash.
I have to admit they did a pretty good job of trying to cover up the decaying produce (fooled me at least), but I doubt very much I will ever give them the chance to do it again.
The tomatoes were quite cold when I bagged them (this should have been a big red flag). I think they refrigerate them before bringing them out to delay the decaying process. Anyone dealing with produce should know, tomatoes should not be refrigerated (it changes the composition and turns the inside to mush).
Produce in this store is advertised as so cheap because it should be tossed rather than sold (period)!
I also read the reviews of former employees that used to work for Dutchie’s after this experience… the owner sounds like a real winner for sure (sarcasm)! I really recommend anyone considering shopping here read these reviews.
